Material has been edited for clarity, typos hamnack been corrected, and some new exercises have been added. I went thru the exercises, and took me awhile to finish, but it was enjoyable. Each chapter further has a number of sections typically which make it easy to follow the book’s progression and to find relevant topics.

In the second group the proofs will be selected mainly for their hamack. For instance, I like how the book explains the differences among theorems, lemmas, corollaries, and propositions, since students sometimes are confused by such labels.

Second, there are tons of completely written-out proofs in the answers section at the back. I will be incorporating these sections in my future courses due to the elegant way the author has handled these techniques.

He works mostly in the areas of combinatorics and graph theory. I also wish there were a “what to read next” appendix or something for the autodidact.

Comments Although there are certain aspects of the text I would modify, these aspects are minute compared to the amount of understanding and depth that the author introduces.

I hamkack that these are very significant things, and that they are sufficient for anyone teaching a course of this nature to consider adopting this text. In fact when I did Law you could be assured that the yearly book bill would run into the hundreds of dollars. It seemed like I was scolded during the section.

The book’s chapters are divided into four parts Fundamentals; How to Prove Conditional Statements; More on Proof; and Relations, Functions and Cardinalityand each part logically follows from the previous ones in a clear way. There is a potentially useful chapter on combinatorics – basic stuff multiplication principle, factorials, Pascal’s triangle, a little inclusion-exclusion that we can’t hqmmack assume our students have seen in high school.
