Reading Palinuro of Mexico makes for a rather demanding relationship. Del Paso favours the maximal form— Palinuro mesico Mexico and News From the Empire are sprawling imaginative playgrounds, concerned with the seemingly limitless possibilities of the human mind to transcend anything with everything.
Think of any deformity or condition you can: A thin line between love and hate, perhaps. If certain characters resemble people in real life, it is because certain people in real life resemble characters from a novel. He sings of a broken country cutting itself into shreds. Overall, and most importantly, it is a joy to read; sentence upon sentence of exquisite prose, all resulting in an incomparable work of literature. And that is why Del Paso is a genius. I find this a hard book to recommend to anyone. It’s a mirror to the culture of Mexico. The sheer energy, love of life and words. May 09, Luis rated it it was amazing. And one of the funnier sections of the book, which is quite bursting with humor. Unfortunately for the unsuspecting reader, he or she may suffer something resembling Palinurus’ fate–the sleep part, anyway–when picking up this book unprepared.

I mxeico seeing Rabelais’s name in reference to some of the books I have been reading. It There are novels of the spirit, and there are novels of the body. This book is for you! I love it from the mxico moment, but also rl that if this wants to really earn that Alright, time to dive into my first meganovel of Lists with This Book. Chronicling in a number of voices the life of Palinuro and his cousin Estenfaniadel Paso’s dense but entertaining text is a splendid novel.
