I really liked this book because it really connected to my history assignment and one of the books I also recently read.

This is the story of two generations in a Chinese family in America. The voices of the narrator–oldest of the three children–and of the others are terse and percussive. In many ways, I really myennr this book. I believe that the secrets we hold in our hearts are our anchors, that even the unspoken between us is a measure of our every promise to the living and to the dead.

It is a great book even it exaggerated a little because every family member in the Bone had “big problem”. Seemed kind of gimmicky to me. So there is some character development that is observed later in the novel.

I did not find it distracting, but to each, his own. By Chinese standards, that wasn’t lucky. Meanwhile, youngest sister Nina lives in N. I was remembering how much I enjoyed the Joy Luck Club and when this book was described as a similarly inter-generational story rich in cultural idiosyncrasies and very thoughtful, that resonated with me.

A loving tribute to her own family, who she has said cannot read the novel due to their limited English, but she knows they are proud nonetheless. While dealing with any kind of death is always difficult, a suicide is probably one of the modes that ensures that the bereavement never really goes away- unlike death by disease or disaster or even crime, which are always seen as tragedies but where you always have most of the answers, suicides are seen dae preventable tragedies, where you never have the answers.

Ng’s wry myebne of Leila’s visit to the Hoy Sun Ning Yung Benevolent Association; a heart-breaking scene in which the suddenly aged Leon can’t find the grave of the man who sponsored his American entry papers; and the engaging opening chapter, in which Leila wanders the city streets, interrogating its less industrious denizens to learn the whereabouts of her idle stepfather.

And how do the children in this family escape without feeling ny traitors and without turning their backs on their heritage? We never really get into her character.

The bbone has some mjenne language, but mostly it is a day to day portrayal of people struggling mightily with understanding each other, why one daughter jumped off a building to her death, why the father, Leong, could not find a secure place in the economic order. No one, especially the protagonist, seemed to find any resolution or realization or purpose or acceptance in their suffering. Why is Bone the title of the book? Now more than anything.
