Periodically, I did a Google search here and there for newspaper articles that he mentions in the book, and even Google couldn’t find them. When police enter his home, they find Bernice’s headless corpse hanging in the summer kitchen, having been dressed like a deer. After all, most of his books are about really old cases, and most of the newspapers from the era of his books still aren’t available online. What I take away from this, as a former mental health professional, is that Ed Gein was something of a “perfect storm” of innate and genetic schizophrenia, extreme childhood abuse physical and mental, but most relevant is the mentalisolation, and suggestibility.
Clearly, his mother Agusta had a huge yet warped role in why Gein ultimately did the things he did. Even hardened combat soldiers and toughened police officers get lifelong PTSD if they endure burial duties too often.
The reporting is still there, but Schechter is quite adept at hiding the reportage under a sneaky tale-telling voice, that sucks his readers ddeviant to the horror he’s conveying and makes us want to reach the mysterious revelation even if we already know the I have to hand it to Harold Schechter.
