Meanwhile The Theory of Poker is making a big difference in my game. This is not a book for beginners, who, etoria reading for or mostly for tips on Texas Hold ’em, should start by reading the Harrington on Hold ’em books first. Talk with other players–preferably people who seem better than you.
I like his focus on general concepts and strategy, rather than specific hand strategies and specific techniques. Then I decided I better read it again to see if I still agree with my assessment.

Whether or not you are good at or like math, there is still very useful information for becoming a successful poker player. The math isn’t hard, the examples are clear, and the counterintuitive aspects of the game are given just the right amount of attention.
In my opinion, the single best book ever written on practical poker theory and strategy. They are on my to-read list as well.

Well, it’s a very theory-heavy book, and while I found the theory important and useful, I’d rate this as a book that every poker player should read and know, but it’s davif little short on practical tips for actually sitting at the table, beyond “Know your math and know your theory. This might be different if you playing in Bobby’s Room at the Bellagio with a high end opponent you know well. I got from this book exactly what I needed: This truly illustrates the fundamentals of poker. It is not light reading, more like a textbook, a beginning textbook on poker.

If you’re looking for a book that gives you explicit instructions on how to play every possible hand, this isn’t the book for you. There is not a bit of advice I remember from it. But there is plenty of new information for Sklansky veterans. If there’s something I know about the game that the other person doesn’t, and if he’s not willing to learn or can’t understand, then I take his money.
